What is Geocaching? Geocaching is a high-tech version of treasure hunting. Geocachers seek out hidden treasures utilizing GPS coordinates posted on the Internet by those hiding the cache. Its also known by - "using multi-million dollar satellite technology to locate and hide Tupperware containers in the woods"
This modern-day treasure hunt, using longitude and latitude and with the help of a hand-held GPS device. You are taken to within a metre or two of a hiding place and then have to find the treasure or cache as it is known. The cache can be anything from a film canister attached to the back of a bench to a bigger container hidden in a tree stump or hole by a bridge.
Once found, you sign your name and, providing you leave something in return, you can take some of the "treasure" – usually a small toy or souvenir. You can also place caches yourself and include colectable or trackable items for others to find.
Geocaching is a neat way to get some excersize, from easy strol from the car to multi mile walks in anything from open country/forestry/parks and gardens to inner city hides/finds. It can take 15 mins to find your target or spend a whole day with the kids and bag several.
