What is ghost?
Norton Ghost allows you to backup your PC in one easy step.

One of the best resources for ghost info is The Radfield Ghost Guide  and one the easiest ways to use ghost is via Hiren's BootCD A Dos Bootable CD, Partition, Data Recovery, Tools etc.

First you will need 2 partitions on your hard disk  you cant save an image to the same partition that you are backing up.
Start ghost and back up a partition  - To CREATE an image:
• Select Local -> Partition -> To Image
• Select your source drive
• Select your source partition
• Select your image destination
• Name the image file
• Select compression
• Begin dumping
• After image dumping is complete you should get the message: Completed Successfully
• Quit

You’ve just made a backup image. It’s a good idea to copy the backup to DVD and keep it somewhere safe.

To RESTORE an image at a later date:
---------------------
• Select Local -> Partition -> From Image
• Select the drive where the image is stored
• Select image file (*.gho)
• Select the destination partition to be restored/overwritten
Confirm the dreaded overwrite question [Make sure you know what the heck you're doing here!] and let 'er rip!

Restart the computer and voila the backup has restored your system (either an individual partition or an entire hard drive) to its original, working condition .. should it ever fail .. for whatever reason. This should help you sleep better at night.

Ok you’ve bought your PC taken it home, unpacked, managed to put all the bits together and started the machine you’ll have a new OS rearing to go.
When to use Ghost

  1. Right at the beginning - the complete reinstall disk.
  2. Remove any unwanted software and add the essentials get it just like you want – a custom reinstall.
  3. Anytime you intend to make any major change or you are unsure about some software you are installing. - Disaster recovery.

Reinstall
If you HDD fails. – you cannot use an image to restor to a different PC unless its identical to the original (mobo, mem, video card etc.)
Every 12 months or so WinDoze slows down with all the progs and crap you’ve loaded on to your PC.
After any  problem  that you cant live with.
